Today Third Hour Background
The Third Hour of Today originally debuted in October 2000, as an extension of NBC’s iconic Today show, offering a more relaxed and conversational format compared to the earlier hours. The hosts, often a combination of anchors and correspondents, discuss news, lifestyle, and pop culture in a more casual, free-flowing format.
This hour features cooking demonstrations, live performances, and interactive segments, bringing in a mix of lightheartedness and informative content.
Replacement of Megyn Kelly Today:
In September 2017, NBC launched Megyn Kelly Today, a one-hour segment of the Today show, which aired in the 9:00 a.m. slot (traditionally where the third hour of Today had aired). It was hosted by former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and focused on news, current events, and interviews.
However, the show faced challenges, including mixed reviews and controversies related to Kelly’s comments on sensitive topics. The biggest controversy came in October 2018, when Kelly made remarks on air about blackface and Halloween costumes, which led to widespread backlash.
Following the controversy, NBC canceled Megyn Kelly Today in October 2018, and the third hour of Today returned with a rotating cast of regular Today show hosts.
In early 2019, the Third Hour of Today was re-established with Al Roker, Sheinelle Jones, Craig Melvin, and Dylan Dreyer becoming the official hosts. This version of the show replaced Megyn Kelly Today permanently and returned to its roots as a more casual, lifestyle-oriented segment of the Today show franchise. It brought back the dynamic mix of news, lifestyle content, and fun, which resonates well with the audience.
